Remember that saying from your childhood? While it may have been true then, in the grown-up world of publishing, CV/resume writing, college applications, dissertations, and the like, words most certainly can hurt you.

We’ve all gotten used to dashing off a quick email or text, not taking the time to search for errors or consider style and tone. While that may pass muster on occasion, there are far more instances when the written word needs more flair and care.

A single typo may be what causes a magazine editor to reject your article pitch. Clunky sentence structuring will turn off an acquisitions editor well before she can realize how wonderful your memoir truly is. In the highly competitive job market, a badly written CV can cost you the job of your dreams. In academia, grammatical errors will put your application in the rejection pile faster than you can say “alma mater.”

The hard fact is, if you’re writing something—anything!—that someone other than your partner or parent will read, you need an editor. And if you have a great story to tell but no real skill to tell it, you’re going to need a ghostwriter to get that story told.

That’s where Sticks and Stones comes in. At SNS, we understand that you have fabulous things to say, but aren’t quite sure how to get those things on paper. We also understand that some folks are phenomenal writers, but still need one more set of eyes to take a look at a manuscript or other written work before it’s off to its final destination. As writers ourselves, we value the insight and perspective a good editor can bring to the words we’ve so painstakingly written. Sometimes we don’t like to hear the hard truth that a significant rewrite is needed, or a sentence is poorly done, but without fail, these changes have turned our work from good to great.

We’d like to do the same for you.

But we don’t stop there.

We’ve seen it time and again: an entertaining personal story, cutting edge YA novel, ground-breaking self-help book, and more just rolling around in someone’s head, useless, because that someone lacks the writing skills necessary to put pen to paper. Hey, that’s okay! We get it. We’re great with words but stink at math. We don’t do our own taxes, and we don’t help our older kids with calculus homework. Instead, we get help from those more knowledgeable than us. Licensed CPAs, math teachers and tutors, and sometimes even Google.
